Case Studies of Music magazines

As you can see there's a clear barcode off centre to the bottom of the page, also there is banners instead of including puffs.
The mast head is placed behind the image, illustrating that the magazine is well enough known that it can be partially covered.
There is a clear colour scheme of blue yellow and red.
This magazine has the typical magazine layout with many cover lines along the side illustrating the stories inside, with images clearly relating to the cover lines.
The main coverline is bigger than the rest, and has the word 'exclusive' next to it indicating that it is not to be missed.
There is a sky line at the top of the page, but relates to the image in the top left hand corner of the magazine.

once again, there is a clear barcode in the bottom corner of the page and just above the barcode is the date and magazine number.                                       There is a clear colour scheme of grey, orange and navy blue. similarly to the first magazine, the masthead is partially covered by the main image.       The sky line also sticks to the colour scheme including orange and navy blue within it. Unlike the first magazine, there is a website link placed at the middle bottom of the front cover.                                                                   This magazine has a puff placed on top of the mast head saying 'whos #1' indicating they are the number one music magazine.                                   The cover lines also stick to the colour scheme. The main image is a mid body shot of a r and b artist, his body posture is slyly leaning to show him posing.
hip hop weekly demographics
hip hop weekly advertisements
Here is the demographics for Hip Hop weekly (2009) as you can see majority of the readers are female, and from the black community, it is evident even from the front cover that it is aimed at the black community, as majority of the front covers and features within the magazine are of Afro Caribbean culture, also here shows the main companies who advertise in Hip Hop weekly, as you can probably see, there are some pretty big name brands there such a Pepsi, Burger King and Ford, which instantly shows that the magazine must get good reception from the public.
Averse from HHW, VIBE is read mostly by male readers, also of the black origin. Similarly the highest percentage of readers are 21+
By researching the media kits of both magazines, I've found that VIBE magazine is youth oriented and has been running for 23 years now.

  1. This is an improved analysis of the front covers, using media language. However you have not considered meanings / connotations in enough depth and you have not analysed the contents pages or the DPSs. Vanessa
