Case Studies of Music magazines

As you can see there's a clear barcode off centre to the bottom of the page, also there is banners instead of including puffs.
The mast head is placed behind the image, illustrating that the magazine is well enough known that it can be partially covered.
There is a clear colour scheme of blue yellow and red.
This magazine has the typical magazine layout with many cover lines along the side illustrating the stories inside, with images clearly relating to the cover lines.
The main coverline is bigger than the rest, and has the word 'exclusive' next to it indicating that it is not to be missed.
There is a sky line at the top of the page, but relates to the image in the top left hand corner of the magazine.

once again, there is a clear barcode in the bottom corner of the page and just above the barcode is the date and magazine number.                                       There is a clear colour scheme of grey, orange and navy blue. similarly to the first magazine, the masthead is partially covered by the main image.       The sky line also sticks to the colour scheme including orange and navy blue within it. Unlike the first magazine, there is a website link placed at the middle bottom of the front cover.                                                                   This magazine has a puff placed on top of the mast head saying 'whos #1' indicating they are the number one music magazine.                                   The cover lines also stick to the colour scheme. The main image is a mid body shot of a r and b artist, his body posture is slyly leaning to show him posing.
hip hop weekly demographics
hip hop weekly advertisements
Here is the demographics for Hip Hop weekly (2009) as you can see majority of the readers are female, and from the black community, it is evident even from the front cover that it is aimed at the black community, as majority of the front covers and features within the magazine are of Afro Caribbean culture, also here shows the main companies who advertise in Hip Hop weekly, as you can probably see, there are some pretty big name brands there such a Pepsi, Burger King and Ford, which instantly shows that the magazine must get good reception from the public.
Averse from HHW, VIBE is read mostly by male readers, also of the black origin. Similarly the highest percentage of readers are 21+
By researching the media kits of both magazines, I've found that VIBE magazine is youth oriented and has been running for 23 years now.

Photoshop Practice exercise

here is my very first. attempt at a magazine front cover. as you can see it isn't completely finished, however there is an ongoing colour scheme of blue, black, and white. using the colour tool on photoshop, I have created the font colour to be the same as the colour of the main images lipstick. Using the rubber tool, i have paces the mast head to look as if it is behind the main image.

Contents Page of HAMMER Magazine

G

Here is the contents page for HAMMER magazine as you can see there's two sides to the contents page. On the left side there's a message from the editor, this is very common in magazines, not so common in music magazines though. The message from the editor is structured very typically, using columns, also a gutter (the space between the columns and around the page). At the bottom of the page there's a text box which matches the colour scheme of black, red and white which shows a competition for the readers to enter. At the top of the page there's images which seem to link to the chronologically ordered contents which is also structures in columns. On the right side of the right page, there is a long list of all the editors and journalist which wrote the stories within the magazine. Images are located  within the middle oh the right page which also link to the different parts on the contents page. As I've mentioned previously, HAMMER magazine has stuck to the colour scheme of Black, Red and White, in a way this links to the whole feel/ theme of the magazine, as it has that rocky, metal type of feel. Not so typical for music magazines, there are several fonts being used within the contents page, this could be off putting, however with the magazine it fits the style .

Double Page Spread Attempt

This here is my own take on a double page spread, as you can see i have added a headline, columns with my editorial, and have inserted a pull quote, these are also known as a lift-outs, it helps highlight  is a key phrase, quotation, or excerpt that has been extracted from an article and used as a graphic element, serving to entice readers into the article or to highlight a key topic. It is typically placed in a larger or distinctive typeface and on the same page. Also as you can clearly see there's a large image taking up the left hand side of the page. With double page spreads, the image or largest image is typically placed on the left hand side, as we read from left to right, so it is the first thing to be seen. I've chosen to use an image of music magazines, as it relates to the text in the article. The headline I've used is very much basic, as this is my first own attempt. Generally headlines are much larger than the other text of the article. I haven't included a colour scheme, as you can see it is pretty much basic black and white.

Double Page Spread

In last week's lesson, we focused on remaking a double page spread article on In design. This involved things such as leaning how to space columns, placing images, changing font size and colour, and creating a title. We used the initial DPS as an outline of what we was doing, as it gave us a clear idea of where everything was meant to be placed. Above is my take of the DPS.
